History

One of the most notable locations in Croydon is Bristol College, which was an Episcopal college founded in 1833, which was the first college in the state to offer programs that combined intellectual learning with manual labor.

White Hall of Bristol College became an orphanage and a hospital during the Civil War and was later reinstated as The Bridgewater School (from 1868 through the 1880s), serving the orphaned children of African American soldiers.

Bristol Borough, which governs Croydon, was the third city in Pennsylvania, following Chester and Philadelphia. Being located along the Delaware River, it became a major hub for transportation between Philadelphia and New York City.

When New Hope opened quicker canal routes between the two major cities, Bristol was bypassed for the more convenient waterway. Though the area cut significant losses because of the change, it was eventually able to grow stable through the expansion of industry.
