Why Medical Misdiagnosis is So Prominent

Research conducted by HealthyGrades.com revealed that medical misdiagnosis and subsequent treatment errors make up 40 percent of reported medical errors. About 155 out of every 1,000 patients reports an adverse event involving a failure to diagnose or a misdiagnosis. While they are more common than people think, misdiagnosis and failure to diagnose a condition are forms of medical malpractice. When they happen, the consequences can be dire.

With all of the time spent in schools and training, it’s hard to believe how many doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals make mistakes in their diagnosis. These mistakes lead to errors in treatment (because the treatment was based on a false diagnosis). Now a dangerous situation is magnified; the real problem isn’t being treated and the medication or course of action can lead to other healthcare problems.

Medical errors are common for a variety of reasons. Here are the most common:

Overcrowded emergency rooms: If you’ve ever been to an emergency room, you know how chaotic and busy they can be. In these hectic situations, it’s very easy for doctors to rush through patients and make a hurried diagnosis. When people are rushing, even trained professionals, mistakes are made.

Overconfidence: Arrogance is the mother of many mistakes; nothing’s different in a hospital or doctor’s office. Perhaps your physician is highly confident in his or her ability to diagnose that he or she may ignore potentially helpful information from nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Understaffing: If a doctor doesn’t have enough support staff, how can he or she be expected to perform their duties to the highest level of their ability? More support frees up a physician to make the most accurate diagnosis possible.

Regardless of the reason, no matter how valid, you don’t have to accept the potentially life-altering results of a misdiagnosis. If you or someone you love has been the victim of medical malpractice, you need to take legal action immediately.
